Joana BC: Porto, Portugal; I have no choice! Life keeps placing materials, objects, creatures in front of me so I welcome them into my practice. For a long time I’ve felt that my paintings and drawings, in their two-dimensionality, placed themselves in the domains of dream and thought while my sculptural work was at the level of the real belonging to the dimension of touch and playfulness! I cared about exploring the tensions between these two worlds, therefore I ‘profaned’ the paintings, pierced the canvases, glued objects to them, allowing reality to invade them. That evolved to the drawings I now make with collages. I work with ordinary materials and weird objects that are considered worthless. I manipulate them so they become extraordinary and meaningful. I buy them at flea markets, some are even offered to me… “Wow, Joana might like this…” From time to time I commit an extravagance and buy vulgar materials found in the arts and crafts sections. My work is a personal mythology (a homemade one). The histories and characters come to light and I give them the shape they need to become alive. I want to create realities that are stuck between the visible and the invisible, the mundane and the divine.
